5 Pro Tips for a Successful Move

Moving? How exciting! But if you don’t pay attention, it could become a source of unnecessary stress.

Here are five things to keep in mind for a successful move.

1.Prepare a box with your essential items

Even a little move can be tiring. When the day’s finally over, you don’t necessarily feel like having to open every box looking for your towel and your toothbrush.

That’s why it’s a good idea to keep a box or bag handy with the essentials: personal grooming products, a few days’ worth of clothing, electrical appliances and important papers.

2.Pack your boxes (in advance!)

It’s easy to convince yourself that you don’t really have all that many things and that you’ll have plenty of time to pack your boxes the night before. However, even a small apartment can hold a surprising amount of stuff: the bedding tucked away in a corner of the closet, the toolbox, the plants that can’t be stacked on top of each other, the dishes, the winter tires, all the kids’ toys, etc.

To avoid any unpleasant surprises, allow yourself plenty of time to pack your boxes. By taking care of it ahead of time, you’ll also give yourself the opportunity to sell a few things to lighten your load on moving day.

When it comes to getting the boxes, themselves, you might be able to borrow some from your neighbors or relatives. Many businesses and restaurants throw out boxes every day, as well. If you still can’t find enough, most hardware and home improvement stores sell boxes.

3.Manage your mail

Canada Post offers mail forwarding service. You can pay for this service online or at the post office to ensure that your mail gets sent to your new address.

Also, don’t forget to inform your other service providers of your move. These include your internet, TV and electric company, as well as your home deliveries, like baskets of vegetables, your newspaper, your online purchases, etc.

4.Find someone to watch Fido and Garfield

If you have pets, it might be a good idea to ask someone to look after them on moving day. For one thing, this will keep them out of the way. For another, keep in mind that moving involves a lot of open doors. It isn’t exactly relaxing spending the evening chasing after a dog who’s decided to run off and explore his new neighborhood.

5.Find a team and some equipment

If you do decide to move by yourself, get some friends to help you, get a dolly so they won’t break their backs, and make sure you have a truck or van to transport everything. Most importantly, don’t forget to set aside a little extra money to spring for pizza and beer!

Happy moving!
